And, here are two examples of the new-style pages:

These new style pages take a list of UCID’s and automatically alphabetize the output by last name.  They also automatically include photo, title, phone, email, office location, and office hours from NJIT’s LDAP directory (aka http://directory.njit.edu).

Each “block” of UCID’s can have a “header” (e.g., Distinguished Faculty block or Assistant Professor block) and one of four formats:

1. Photo (or placeholder), name, email, phone number
2. Photo (or placeholder), name, title (if available), email, phone number
3. Photo (or placeholder), name, email, phone number, office number (if avail), and office hours (if avail)
4. Photo (or placeholder), name, title (if available), email, phone number, office number (if avail), and office hours (if avail)

These new template increase the consistent and professional display of faculty listings on academic sites.  It eliminates the manual effort required to re-create all the contact information.  And, it properly re-uses information from the “mothership” source LDAP directory (rather than allow duplicate and un-synchronized information to propagate around the websites).

On Tues and Wed, Nov 10 and 11, 2009, the photographer (Eric Wolfe) will have a table set up on the ground floor of the Campus Center from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm (so evening faculty — please stop by).  No reservation is required; just stop by.  You’ll be able to see and approve your portrait on the photographer’s laptop before you leave.  The whole thing won’t take more than five minutes, and we’ll even send you a digital copy to use however else you’d like.

Faculty portraits will go on the Faculty Profile Pages and our People website.  Staff photos will also go on department web pages.

It is a branded site — using the same template as the President’s website.

The Experts Guide was one of the very last sites still being managed in the LCMS2/Documentum environment.

The widget automatically pulls in the most recent 3, 5, or 7 blog items (title, plus first 270 characters or so of the posting) and displays it on the webpage.  The widget includes a link to the blog and a link to the RSS feed of the blog.

The blogs themselves are at http://blogs.njit.edu

Here is a screenshot of how its implemented on the NJIT library’s site.

We’ll also be working on a Version # 2 of this widget that would embed blog headlines in the right column of webpages.

Both the latter two sites use Twitterfeer.com to suck in the RSS feeds from the respective Newsroom and Athletics sites.  So, in some respects the Twitters sites are glorified RSS feeds, but (1) they actually make it easeir for people to follow those two site, (1) they are clearly “RSS auto-feed sites” and, (3) they incorporate a bit more of the “social” aspect (follow me/follow you … wasn’s that a Genesis song?)  than just straight RSS.

In the meantime, we’ll keep our eyes open for similar opportunites to experiment.
