Hello NJIT! Here are some important Campus-wide and Senate Updates. Please feel free to email me at ss-pres@njit.edu if you have any questions.

Student Senate Initiative: Improved Student Satisfaction

This past spring semester, the Department of Institutional Research and Planning (IRP) conducted a Student Satisfaction Survey. A number of concerns were raised based off of the results of the survey, with students citing parking as well as the overall satisfaction of the Registrar, Bursar, and Financial Aid offices. Based off of the results of this survey, the Senate is going to work with these departments in order to remedy key student complaints. To better assess the situation, Senate has teamed up with the IRP to compile a brief survey that can give us further understanding as to what sort of problems need to be resolved.

Please keep an eye out for the survey! Senate is in need of your input to better serve the students. Please take it seriously and fill it out accordingly.

Something to keep in mind is that customer service works both ways. To foster a more caring environment on this campus, remember to say “Please” and “Thank You” to those who are working to make your experience at NJIT more enjoyable. As silly as this may sound, this is a key element that is usually neglected and can be easily improved upon to make this Campus much more friendly and caring.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy

This is a reminder of the new policies surrounding Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for Financial Aid that became effective on July 1, 2011. These new SAP policies are in accordance with the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended. Under these guidelines NJIT is required to monitor students who receive financial aid to determine if they are making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) towards their degree program.

The new policy is meant to assist students stay on track for graduation. SAP is measured once a year at the conclusion of the Spring term. The criteria that outlines the definition of a student’s progress towards a degree and the consequences if progress is not achieved, is outlined in the following SAP Policy. It is very important that you read the policy. The policy can be downloaded at this URL:http://www.njit.edu/financialaid/about/academicprogress.php

NJIT Spirit Week

Student morale and happiness is something the Senate values. We witnessed a great deal of Highlander Spirit during the NJIT Day Weekend, but thatdoes not mean it has to stop there!

The Student Senate is working to help the students of NJIT embody the Highlander Spirit throughout their tenure at this University. The Week of Oct. 17th to Oct. 21st we will be holding the NJIT Spirit Week. Senate is working closely with Athletics, IFSC, and RHA to accomplish this task.

This week is meant to be full of School Spirit and Pride. We have free giveaways and prizes all week! See our website for more details: senate.njit.edu

GDS Discount Cards on Sale

The Honors Student Council has started to sell the GDS Discount Card (sticker). This sticker is a 10% discount which is valid at all GDS venues and is not just restricted to continuous dining. The venues include: Taco Bell, Highlander Pub, Leafs, Grains, Cafe Spice, C-Store, Tech Cafe, The Grill, and Trattoria. The cards are valid for the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 semester. The price is $10 (cash) and can be picked up in Fenster 415 from 10am-4pm Monday-Friday. This discount card is available to all NJIT students!! Please contact Prem Patel, Vice President of the Honors Council, (pp69@njit.edu) for more details.

Photography Contest

As mentioned previously, the NJIT Student Senate has recently worked to renovate a Student Lounge in the Central King Building. In order to add a different dimension to the lounge there is a plan to add various black and white photographs comprised of NJIT related images to the walls of this room. As a result, it was surmised that the NJIT students themselves would be the best source to retrieve the kind of photographic works of art needed for this facility. Hence the creation of this very photography contest that all students are welcomed to participate in.

I have already received some great submissions but we are looking for more! There are many cash prizes and awards available to the winners. Please see our website for more details: senate.njit.edu .

Student Senate Feedback Sessions

During the month of October the Senators of the Student Senate are holding their Feedback Sessions. This is your opportunity to have your voice be heard and recommend solutions to any issues within your major/college! Most Senators will be giving away Free Food and Prizes! Please see our website for more details: senate.njit.edu.

Vacant Senate Positions

The importance of equal representation at this great University is something we in the NJIT Student Senate take to heart.

Welcome back students of NJIT. I hope everyone has enjoyed their first few weeks of classes and is ready for a great semester full of exciting new changes and events:

Changes with Academic Policies

To better improve NJIT’s retention rate and give students a chance to improve their GPAs, changes have been made to the Withdrawal and Grade Replacement Policies that are being implemented this Fall 2011 semester:

If students are repeating a course, their second grade will automatically replace the first grade they have received in their GPA calculation (regardless of course level).

For students who switch their major, none of the classes that are relevant to your new major will be included in your GPA calculation if you had gotten below a C. The new academic advisor must approve the courses that no longer applicable to the degree, as well as which courses can apply to the new major.

Changes with Curriculum

To give NJIT students a chance to improve their graduation timing and prevent any delay, the following changes have been made with the Math Department and will be implemented starting this Fall 2011 semester:

Math 098 and 099 have been eliminated, leaving Pre-Calculus (Math 107/Math 110) as the only course offered for those students who are not automatically placed in Calculus I (Math 111/Math135/Math 138).

The first math common will now be taken after 3 weeks of classes as opposed to 4 weeks. This will assist professors in detecting the students that may need additional help in a certain area.

A new sequence has been developed for Calculus I and II. For those who are struggling in Math 111 and Math 112, the option will exist to take the two courses in 3 semesters (Math 131, Math 132, and Math 133). For those who do not perform well on their first common exam, the Department of Mathematical Sciences will AUTOMATICALLY change the student’s registration, moving them into the three-course sequence. The option of an appeal will only be available on Sunday, September 25th. Please refer to this following link if you would like further information: http://m.njit.edu/Undergraduate/Course_Syllabi/Fall2011/PDF_F11/math_statement_111.pdf

If you do not do well on the first common, please seek assistance at CAPE or the new Tutoring Center in the Math Department. Please refer to this link for further information: http://math.njit.edu/students/undergraduate/extrahelp-math110_math111.php

This summer has thus far proven to be very eventful for the NJIT population. Many projects are underway to ensure that those returning for the fall semester are greeted with an efficient and more progressive campus. The following is a list of updates of things to expect this upcoming semester:

Changes with GDS

As the food vendor for NJIT, student satisfaction is a top priority for GDS. Student surveys are some of the best methods to reach out to the student body. As such it is crucial to take the time to fill out these surveys. In fact, the following changes that will be implemented for the Fall have been a direct result of student satisfaction surveys:

All Gourmet Dining locations will now be accepting credit and debit cards (Continuous Dining, Pub, Taco Bell, etc)

Continuous Dining will now remain open until 10:00PM, as opposed to their usual closing time of 9:00PM in order to accommodate those who have evening classes

The Dining Hall will be seeing the debut a new food station: Fixin’s & Nacho Bar

The Starbucks “Proudly Brew” program will be expanding the availability of original Starbucks products. This will include more Starbucks beverages as well as food items. As a result, GDS will be able to offer more options at Tech-Cafe.

Please contact me if you would like to read a letter from Joe Lally, the Director of Community Relations regarding these changes.

Student Senate Sponsored Photography Contest

The NJIT Student Senate has recently worked to renovate a Student Lounge in the Central King Building. In order to add a different dimension to the lounge there is a plan to add various black and white photographs comprised of NJIT related images to the wall of this room. As a result, it was surmised that the NJIT students themselves would be the best source to retrieve the kind of photographic works of art needed for this facility. Hence the creation of this very photography contest that all students are welcomed to participate in. Here are some basic guidelines for the Photo Contest:

The contest will be for the duration of the Fall Semester.

Winners will be announced during a “Black and White Tie” showcase, which will have plenty of free food to all who attend.

Those winners will recieve a cash prize as well as have their photographs on display at the new student lounge located in the Central King Building.

Please feel free to contact me at ss-pres@njit.edu for more information and if you would like to participate.

Enrollment

I am proud to announce that NJIT will have an incoming freshman class of approximately 1000 students for the Fall, bringing our overall enrollment to 9000 students.

As our University continues to grow keep alert to the constant changes that occur as they may directly impact your tenure at NJIT. Please stay connected with the NJIT Student Senate and watch out for future updates. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

I hope you’ve all had a smooth transition to the fall semester. We’re only a month and a half into the school year and the NJIT Student Senate has been working tirelessly to fulfill our duties to our constituents. Please read through the following updates to get an idea of some major projects we’ve been working on.

NJIT Music/Band Room Initiative

A goal that the NJIT Student Senate is looking to follow this year is the establishment of an NJIT Music/Band room. After the complete acquisition of the Central King Building (formerly Central High School), the Senate saw a golden opportunity to provide students with a much needed area for leisure and creativity. We’ve been informed that there is a room in the Central King Building that was built to be a band room, with proper acoustics and infrastructure. Our vision is to plan, develop, and build a well-equipped music room for the entire university to use. Not only will this room be used to play, produce, and record music; but it could also be used for staged performances and lounging around (similar to The Pub). The Senate has formed a CKB Ad-Hoc Committee to lead the initiative. On October 13th 2010, the Student Senate unanimously voted in favor of a document titled the “NJIT Music/Band Resolution”. The Resolution explains why our constituents will benefit from this room, some ideas from our vision, and a declaration stating we want to move forward with the initiative. The Resolution can be found online at our website (senate.njit.edu). Refer to the title labeled “Legislation”

Issue on Academic Integrity

I’ve served on the Student Senate for 3 years and the issue of academic integrity has always come up in discussion. However, when the Senate polled their constituents this year, the issue of academic integrity was rampant. We are concerned that more students are being academically dishonest now, than they have been in the past. The Student Senate has already taken action in trying to provide a solution. We’ve established an Academic Integrity Ad-Hoc Committee to lead the initiative of drafting an assessment and proposal document to be brought in front of the University. The document will identify different scenarios of cheating, and how those situations should be addressed using Standard Operating Procedures, or best practices used by other Professors.

Warren Street Station Signage Project

If you’ve followed the 2010- ’11 Senate thus far, you’d know that we had finally passed legislation to initiate the Warren Street Station Signage Project. The vision of the project was to make the NJ Transit Warren Street Station feel more like “our own”. The details of the project entail two 24ft x 5ft signs that display information pertaining to NJIT’s involvement with local history, education and research, and our campus and community. The two signs will have the same design, but different layouts. Sign A will be more information intensive, and Sign B, a more visual, less informative concept. The idea is to have Sign A on the outbound side (since people are usually waiting there longer), and Sing B on the Warren Street inbound side (since people are usually just passing along). The target date for completion is late November, while we patiently wait for the project to complete – we’ll be planning our ribbon cutting ceremony.

Feedback Sessions

October is feedback session month. Each College and Major Representative has scheduled a session with their respective departments to give their constituents an opportunity to come and voice their concerns about general university issues, specific curriculum concerns, or any other feedback. If you want to know when your Feedback Session is – visit our website at senate.njit.edu and check it out. Also, keep in mind that all Feedback Session reports will be documented in the Senate’s minutes, The Vector, and on our website.

Weekends @ NJIT

The 2010-2011 Student Senate Executive board was determined to revitalize Senate’s Weekends @ NJIT series. Our Weekends @ NJIT series was pioneered to ensure that there are events, activities, and opportunities for our constituents on the weekends. From past experiences, we’ve realized our strategy must be readjusted. Turning this campus from a 4 day university to a 7 day university is not a task the Senate can tackle alone. We’ve invited other campus-wide organizations to assist the Senate in planning and attending these events. Be on the lookout for our activities which involve competitions, games, shows, themed pub nights, sporting events, and much more. Stay on campus on the weekends – or you’ll miss out.

Student Senate Standing Rules

The Standing Rules is a governing document that dictates the policies and procedures of the Student Senate when dealing with recognized clubs on campus. Specifically, we worked on the following issues:

· Clearly distinguished funding guidelines for x, y, and z clubs

· Properly worded and defined “funded” clubs

· Ensured fairness in funding for clubs, events, supplies, materials, etc.

· Documented procedures that were performed but never formalized

Student Organization Space Allocation Committee (SOSAC)

The Student Senate assists Campus Center staff in chairing and serving on the SOSAC. The Senate had realized that it was difficult to hold clubs accountable if they did not adhere to the responsibilities of having an office on campus. To restore order in the system, the Student Senate had presented a SOSAC Sanction System that clearly details any violations and consequences. The SOSAC Sanction System has been adapted in to Campus Center policy to:

· Assist the Senate and Campus Center staff to work more effectively with clubs in office space

· Help clubs understand what office responsibilities they must adhere to

· Identify all violations and consequences so that there is a clear understanding

Student Senate Elections Packet

The Student Senate saw that it was necessary to update the Senate Elections Packet to help address some of the concerns brought up in the last few elections. Specifically, we did the following:

· Clarified how Social Networking, e-mail, and the internet is to be used

· Divided the packet into Articles and Sections to have a more organized and easy to read layout

· Cross-referenced any statements that may have been ambiguous our misconstrued

· Added a Campaign Sanction System that clearly lists campaign violations and consequences

· A Financial Form tracker and a Campaign Plan Submission Form

The final document is still being drafted and will be brought in front of the Senate in the near future. We are confident that the new adjustments will make it easier for the university to engage with the Student Senate elections.

What else have we been working on?

· Student Senate FY’10 –’11 Budget: Balanced and adjusted our budget to get approved by the University.

· NJIT Day Funding: The Student Senate felt that this is an event our constituents can’t go without! We took the time to closely analyze, debate, and wisely fund the Highlander Games.

· Freshmen Weekend: All the welcoming events and Tech Games – Welcome Class of 2014!

· Psychology Minor: Working with NJIT and Rutgers to form this minor for NJIT students.

· Addressing Students Concerns On:

o Academic Learning Communities

o Course Curriculums

o Professors

o On-Campus Food

o Facilities

Conclusion

I encourage you all to stay connected with the NJIT Student Senate to find out more information on our progress. We are proud of the work we’ve done thus far, though we are eager to do much more. I would like to remind you that for your Student Senate to remain effective, you must take an active role. We’ve established a culture of “listen first”, then take action. For us to fulfill our promise to our constituents, we need your participation. There is much more work ahead of us and we’re optimistic that things are heading in the right direction.

Stay Connected, Stay Spirited, Go Highlanders!

To The NJIT Community,

The Student Senate values events where our undergraduate constituents have an opportunity to display school pride, take a break from the stress of academics, and have a lot of fun. However, due to state-wide budget cuts, our University was faced with a tough decision to completely eliminate our NJIT Weekend budget. To hold true to our promise of representing the best interests of our students, the Student Senate allocated the necessary funds for the NJIT Weekend festivities to commence.

The decision could not have been wiser, as we witnessed the most amazing display of school spirt this University has offered. The weekend started on Thursday, with the always entertaining Mr. and Ms. NJIT Pageant. Friday featured WJTB, SAC, and Senate’s well attended Last Blast of Summer. The competitive Highlander Games headlined Saturday’s events, along with the Women’s Volleyball victory. The weekend finished on Sunday with the traditional Tour De Tech races.

Of course, we did not forget the first ever NJIT LipDub; an event that has truly heightened the engagement, interests, and spirit of current students, prospective students, alumni, friends, family, staff, faculty, and administration. Taking place after the NJIT Highlander Games, our student body could not have been more pumped. Our gratitude extends greatly to the NJIT Theater Arts Program and additional University Services, who brilliantly coordinated and executed the LipDub.

A quick Facebook search of “NJIT LipDub” gives accurate testimonies of this new level of school pride:

· “YAY NJIT…I am super excited!”

· “Of all the weekends not to be on campus, today had to be one of them.”

· “When did this happen? It looks like half the school was there. Awesome!”

· “That is so cute. I love NJIT – I should’ve gone there.”

The combination of all these festivities has surely energized the Highlander Spirit. Indeed, something has changed at this University. The stigma that NJIT students lack school pride has been broken. Our students want to engage with the University, and they embrace events that allow them to do so.

With that said, we would like to thank the Campus Center staff, SAC, WJTB, NJIT Theatre Arts Program, University Web Services, Residence Life, Greek Life, recognized clubs, administration, and all of our students. Together we can achieve great things; even what some people think is impossible. Less money doesn’t necessarily mean less fun. Ironically, in this case, less money meant more spirit. Nonetheless, we hope this new culture only grows stronger in the heart of a Highlander. “You can’t stop the beat”

Sincerely,

Dominick Cirillo

President, NJIT Student Senate

Hello Highlanders,

Welcome to a new and exciting year! I hope you’ve all had a productive summer through taking classes, working internships, or just getting some rest and relaxation. As September draws near, we need to train ourselves to get in the routine of 8:30am classes, common exams, and late night study sessions. Returning students are familiar with the process, and first-year students will pick up the routine quickly.

In the midst of all the busy work ahead, it’s important to remember all the fun we have along the way. The NJIT Student Senate is committed to offering another year of quality events, and working to resolve issues for the undergraduate population. The Student Senate executive board has worked hard this past summer to ensure the upcoming academic year will be an enjoyable one.

As the voice of the undergraduate population, it is vital for our constituents to express their thoughts and concerns with the Student Senate. We are establishing a culture of “listen first.” Listen first to the students, and then take action. Listen first to the problem, and then provide a solution. For your student government to be effective, you must speak up and take an active role. We are open to all ideas, and committed to representing the best interests of the undergraduate population.

The Senate is working on finishing up pending projects such as the Warren Street Station Renovation, and the Find My Advisor Portal. With good measure, the Senate should complete these goals in the near future, while focusing on new initiatives for the upcoming year.

For additional updates on the work of your Student Senate, please follow our progress at senate.njit.edu, or visit our office on the fourth floor in the Campus Center. I wish you all the best of luck in the upcoming year, and encourage you to get involved with the many opportunities NJIT has to offer.

Thank you,

MEMORANDUM

To: NJIT Students
From: Student Senate
Date: Tuesday, March 3, 2009
RE: VERY IMPORTANT Updates

As spring break nears I am please to update everyone with a mid-semester memorandum. Your Student Senate is still continuing its ongoing efforts to improve the main concerns and issues of the undergraduate student population. Below is a list of various things we are working on and have accomplished for you. If any student has any questions or concerns please e-mail us at senate@njit.edu

Best regards,

Baker Assaf
President, NJIT Student Senate

University Code on Academic Integrity
After about a year and a half of a continuous effort to improve academic integrity at NJIT (while relatively low compared to other institutions) the University Faculty approved the new document last Wednesday, February 25, 2009. To summarize the document’s changes, any student who fails a course due to academic dishonesty will receive an “XF” on their transcript rather than an “F.” The “XF” will denote on the student’s transcript “failure due to academic dishonesty.” The actual document will be sent out to the NJIT community by the Office of the Provost so please stay alert.

Student Advising Guidelines (second update)
At the beginning of this semester there was a posted link in the memorandum that was sent out so that every student can view a copy of the document, here is the LINK once more if you did not get a chance to view it the first time. Since that e-mail, the document was approved for distribution by the Institute Committee on Academic Affairs. We encourage every student to look over the document do their part so that the advising process successfully improves.

What to do now? Part of the guidelines allows students to nominate their advisor to receive “The Excellence in Advising Award” which will be administered by the Student Senate. There is currently three weeks left for the nomination period, so we are urging everyone to fill out the nomination form if they feel their advisor has displayed excellence in performing the duties of their position. CLICK HERE TO NOMINATE

Warren Street Station Task Force
The Student Senate approved an ad-hoc committee to research student’s complaints about the Warrant Street station and determine the feasibility of working with NJ Transit to update the ambiance of the station.

Student Senate General Elections
On February 18, 2009 the Student Senate approved the 2009 General Elections Packet. During the second Monday and Tuesday of every April the Student Senate must hold general elections for ALL positions on the Student Senate. If you would like to run for office and have your name on the ballot, please fill out the Elections Packet and be very weary of all deadlines and requirements. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE PACKET

FEEDBACK SESSIONS
All feedback sessions for the Spring 2009 semester have been scheduled and updated on the Senate’s website. We encourage all students to participate in their respective sessions as they are our main communication line from students as what needs to be improved academically such as the Advising Guidelines and Academic Integrity that we have so-far successfully completed. In addition to solving your issues, each feedback session provides students with some incentive for attending such as Free Food, flash drives, raffle-offs and much more! CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE FULL SCHEDULE

Weekends @ NJIT
The weekend programming started about two years ago as a Student Senate initiative to transition the campus to seven days of programming and activities rather than the traditional five. As this great effort continues, the Senate’s Executive board is researching the additional funding needed to sustain and improve on the success we’ve had over the last two years and is likely to recommend to the Student Senate a proposal to increase the student activities fee (currently at $53 per semester).

New Highlander PUB Specials
The Highlander Pub (3rd floor of the Campus Center) has recently added a “daily special” at the recommendation made by the Senate’s Student Affairs Committee based on student complaints of pricing being too high. In keeping with themes of our economic status, there is also a “Daily Pub Stimulus Combo” so check it out! CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE NEW SPECIALS
